About

Profile photo of Esme Collins

Over the past few years, I have dabbled in a variety of mediums and styles. Depending on the brief, my work takes different forms. Within my pieces, I hope to convey energy whether that be through the colour, linework, composition, or story. My first painting is of a friend of mine, Billy. Despite difficult circumstances, Billy stands and feeds the pigeons every day on the street I live on. I wanted to portray a humble act of kindness amidst urban life. Painting has always been a passion of mine, so it felt incredibly special to commemorate a friend in this way.

Within my practice, I enjoy painting and drawing with the occasional dip into digital art. Social commentary has been injected into my work throughout my time in Dundee. I loved discovering my ‘line’ style with brush pens and putting that energy into a book about environmental issues. The second image is from the development of this book and tackles issues of consumerism and the impact of our waste. I enjoy the immediacy of penwork and the dramatic effect it can have. Designing a cover for ‘The City of Stolen Magic’ was a fun way to put those skills that I have learned to use. I enjoy using bright colours to add mood and atmosphere to my pieces and am looking forward to continuing to do so in my practice.

Billy being Billy

Set against a yellow background, this painting portrays a homeless man standing on the street, smiling and holding pigeons. He is standing in various positions. Primary colors dominate the scene, adding warmth and depth.

Bobbing along

This piece features two ducks swimming, captured from below their feet. Among the brush strokes, there are depictions of plastic items, suggesting a commentary on environmental issues or human impact on nature.

'City of Magic' Penguin Cover

On the front cover, there are two hands clasped together on the front page of a book, with a purple ribbon running through the middle, forming the title. The ribbon frames the writing on the burb and there is a second hand on the back cover.
