Multimedia artist exploring themes of feminism inspired by the relationships and life experiences as a non-binary AFAB person.

About

Nina McMullan

SNOT, SICK, SELF, SEX, SPIT. My main drive to create is directed by my own experiences as a non-binary AFAB person growing up in Scotland, influenced by the stereotypes of ugliness and disgust. Through mediums such as photography, drawings, and textile work, I aim to transform what society constitutes as beautiful – tackling insecurities and relationships with myself and others. Collage, text and portraiture are consistently at the base of my work, as well as combining women’s textile crafts to bring together blatantly honest images of bodies and faces as a feminist take on the methods which have historically been dismissed for their association with women. Exploring portraiture in a contemporary sense allows me to explore my feminist viewpoints visually, using uncomfortable imagery such as leaked period blood stains, grinning teeth, glitter sprinkled tongues, and cracked eczema troubled skin.

Bug Crotch

Black and white zoomed in photograph of a crotch sitting on the floor, wearing white underwear adorned with an image of a Pholcidae (commonly known as daddy long-legs).
An image of a close up mouth split into nine sections and re-put together to create a mismatched assemble of the original image.
