Victoria Market is a student village inspired by markets and town centres, providing its academic residents everything it needs

About

Patrick Galloway

Victoria Market is a new concept of student living. Aiming to foster a greater sense of community and cohesiveness in a village for the Dundee academic population. The proposed site is the Old Queen Victoria Works, a retired jute mill situated in the Blackness Conservation Area, only 5 minutes from the main campus of the University of Dundee.

The project takes inspiration from villages and markets, extrapolating the idea that students themselves are individuals with skills and attributes that they can share and trade to find their place in a community. My design recognises that the requirements of each inhabitant will be different, catering to this by providing a variety of social spaces and areas to interact or be alone, whether that be in their room, house or a communal zone.

Common Areas

Interior Render of the village nook common space

The common areas are spaces outside of the houses for the students to interact. They also respond to the needs and wants of the different social types, with different environments and features in each one, as seen in the photo above, the village nook is the common space for the passive type of villager, offering pods for small interactions and alone time, perfect for someone who prefers the relaxed and quiet life.

Trades

The trades exist in the village to fill the needs of the students that live there, as well as draw others in to create a convivial and welcoming environment outside of campus. The Baker's Table cafe seen above is one of the trades and is inspired by a bakers stall at a market, selling baked treats and good coffee to keep the students going and create connections over.

We, as interior and environmental design 4th year students, are going down to London at the start of July to exhibit our work in the hopes that we can catch the eye of a larger pool of people. We are still fundraising and any donations would be greatly appreciated! You can contact us through our Instagram page @ied.2024
