Africa initiative - partnership models

How we are building partnerships through the Africa Initiative.

The Blantyre Declaration

The Blantyre Declaration started as a process for the six public universities of Malawi and the University of Dundee to discuss ways that they can enhance their roles as anchor institutions for their communities by strengthening the way that they work in partnership with other academic institutions, government, business, civil society as well as local people.

It has quickly established itself as a growing commitment to empowering individuals both in Scotland and Africa to build a better future, by creating exciting collaborations and bringing mutual benefits that are potentially transformative.

The African Doctoral Fellowship Scheme

The African Doctoral Fellowship Scheme launched in 2023 as a cornerstone of our Africa Initiative.  In bringing established academics from partner institutions to the University for a fully funded 4 year PhD programme, the Scheme will underpin our research engagement with Africa by bringing Dundee and partner research teams together with the aim of forging enduring and sustainable research collaborations. Equally it reflects our social purpose agenda and commitment to capacity building by providing and funding training that would not otherwise be available to academic colleagues.

The scheme is currently funding five academics from Ghana, Uganda, and Malawi researching a range of topics including the antimalarial drug resistance in Africa; mental health of children and young adults; and sustainable development in rural Malawi.

Educational partnerships

The University of Dundee is working with a growing number of university partners to offer students a range of integrated degree programmes (at undergraduate and postgraduate level), as well as progression and articulation options.

Most recently the University signed an Articulation Agreement for a Master of Laws degree signed with the University of Lagos.
