Hello! My name is Demelza and I enjoy surface design pattern making!

About

Demelza Hart

My style throughout studying at Dundee has developed immensely, and in my final year I have discovered my new found love for surface design, illustrating colourful patterns and motifs for textiles! I am looking forward to seeing where this takes me, and hope to experiment with applying my designs to a range of different products like ceramics, prints, home decor, and so forth!

I enjoy making mixed media illustrations, drawing traditionally with watercolour and coloured pencil, then drawing on top digitally with Procreate for added details. Adobe programmes, mainly Illustrator and Photoshop, are also an enjoyment of mine.

Wallpaper Design

Three wallpaper panels containing repeat patterns of winter animals, a snowy countryside, and Celtic snowflake filigree.

Focusing on the theme of Scottish winter, I created three patterns intended for use as wallpaper. I aimed to capture an elegant, and tranquil atmosphere, taking inspiration from the rolling hills, woodlands, farmlands, and winter animals found in the countryside of Scotland as well as Celtic knots. I drew the patterns digitally and transformed them into a pattern using Illustrator.

Cushions with a repeat pattern containing a squirrel, deer, and ptarmigan, with a pine branch and heather connecting them together vertically. The pattern is also shown as wallpaper in a room.

I further explored how these patterns could be applied to other home decor, and printed one of the designs onto fabric, transforming it into cushions.

DJCAD X V&A

Two tea towels placed next to each other. One with multiple pink and purple fig drawings placed in the centre. The other with two illustrations of a yellow and brown bird, placed in the top right corner. Another image of the tea towels folded.

For this project I created a set of two tea towels. I took inspiration from the ‘Golden Oriole’ tapestry designed by Timorous Beasties. I looked at the nature elements within the print as well as researching behind the bird itself, discovering their love for figs!
