About

photo of Evan O'Hara Thomas

Most of my pieces throughout my degree has been used as a vehicle to develop my visual identity and to hone my techniques. And although I still have a long way to go, I think my passion for visual storytelling and striking visuals is more than present in my work.

Unsurprisingly, I’ve always had a love of horror media and spooky stories (especially when it comes to sharing and telling them), with my main inspirations being artists like Junji Ito, Mike Mignola, Neil Gaiman. And even weird and wonderful artists like Jean Giraud and Arthur Rackham, and many more. As a result of my ever changing inspirations, a common problem I’ve faced throughout my artistic life is that I can never quite pin down the kind of work I make, or what my “style” is. However I believe my work present in my degree show is a good reflection of where I am in my journey so far.

Although my “style” may change to fit whatever briefs I may complete in my career, this is a passion I always want to explore and draw upon for my work; and I’ll never stop creating whatever I want to create, or telling the stories I wish to tell.

Select Finals from my Folio Society Award Competition Project

Three illustrations in distinct styles. A green grassy valley with purple flowers with an odd figure in a large black coat, a dark blue and dingy cave with two creepy characters lit by yellow bright campfire, and a Skelton tangled in its own red gold hair.

These images are adapted selected scenes from the folio society award’s chosen text, “The Truth is in a Cave in the Black Mountains”

DJCAD x V&A Final 2D Outcome

A large illustration of three women talking to each other whilst surrounded by, and mending the many damaged kilts worn by soldiers in World War 1, black and white.

This piece was inspired by the V&A’s Tartan exhibit, wherein I saw a picture of a group of women whose job was to mend the kilts of fallen Scottish soldiers. The kilts were piled high up to the ceiling, yet despite the implications they still found comfort in each others company, which I found very touching and inspiring.

Select Spreads from my Book Project

Black and white illustrated spreads from children’s book, about a child exploring a dark and scary cave full of black shadows.

These are selected spreads from my book project, about a young boy searching for his papa in a dark scary cave, where he must face his fear of it’s monsters to try and save him.

Although my work isn’t available to buy yet, I am hoping to create online shops in the near future, and when I do Ill post about it on my instagram, so the best place to support me would be there.
