Rosalie Thorley

Thorley’s artistic practice delves into the intricate intersections of Druidry and Mariology, expressed through the mediums of oil painting, gouache, sculpture and written word. Each artwork she creates is a devotional piece formed through a meditational process. Rooted in her upbringing within the Druid community and enriched by experiences in Hungary, her fascination with iconography and spiritual art finds resonance in the rich tapestry of Byzantine, Eastern European, and early medieval church traditions.

Inspired by these diverse influences, her work adopts a contemporary lens on iconography, offering stylized depictions of angels and saints. Through a flat and stylized approach, she strives to create a fresh perspective on spiritual imagery, creating a sense of understanding and inclusivity across religion and philosophy.

Central to her practice is a dedicated focus on amplifying the voices of underrepresented female figures, particularly Mary and other female saints. Using historical context and research, she aims to resurrect forgotten styles and narratives, continuing the tradition of iconography whilst creating feminine representation in art. Through syncretism and an embrace of diverse spiritual traditions, she hopes to bring a new understanding to spiritual expression, one that celebrates syncretism and brings representation to both Paganism and Christianity.
